Stories: Annika Reed on the Joy of Printmaking and Creative Retreats

Some people are born with ink in their veins. For artist and printmaker Annika Reed, creativity wasn’t a choice — it was a way of life from the very beginning.

“I honestly don’t know anything else,” she says. “It’s not conscious – my dad was an upholsterer, art was always my favourite subject, and my childhood was spent making and drawing.”

Today, Annika is a celebrated woodblock printmaker, educator, and founder of her own studio practice. She brings more than 20 years of experience in printmaking to her upcoming retreat at Court House Farm — a six-day immersive experience designed to help guests slow down, reconnect with their creativity, and discover the joy of working with their hands.

The Magic of Woodblock Printing

At the heart of the retreat is Annika’s passion for woodblock printing — a medium she has explored deeply and joyfully over two decades.

“You’ll discover how many different techniques you can create from one simple print, how you can work on different surfaces, and just how magical the whole process is.” Annika

No previous experience is required. Whether you’re a curious beginner or an established artist looking to refresh your practice, Annika’s workshops are playful, exploratory, and deeply grounding. It’s about slow making — taking the time to experiment, repeat, and truly connect with the materials in your hands.

A Creative Pause

Retreats are about more than learning a new skill — they’re about stepping away from the noise of everyday life and returning to yourself.

“Slowing down and using your hands is pure meditation,” Annika explains. “Time away from normal life is such a luxury, and it sparks creativity like nothing else.” Annika

Over the course of the retreat, guests will work at their own pace in the studio, take part in group discussions and gentle tutorials, and enjoy long lunches and walks through the gardens. It’s an experience designed to nourish both artistic growth and genuine human connection.

“I hope you'll find a love for printmaking that continues long after the retreat,” she says, “make real friendships with like-minded people, and have a genuinely fun time.” Annika

Why Court House Farm?

Annika’s own design work draws deeply from her surroundings — especially the landscapes, history, and flora of Somerset.

“The history, the beauty — it’s all here,” she says. “Every corner of Court House Farm offers something inspiring. It feels like the perfect fit.” Annika

She’s particularly excited to share this space with a new group of creatives and to witness the wide range of responses that emerge from the same setting.

“Everyone’s approach is so unique. Being surrounded by like-minded people just feeds the soul.”

Still Thinking About It?

If you're considering joining Annika’s retreat but aren’t sure whether it’s the right time, her advice is simple:

“Material things come and go, but lived experiences are the best investment you’ll ever make.”
